LOT to introduce direct flights on Warsaw-Oslo route

Warsaw, 11 October 2017 – The LOT Polish Airlines’ aircraft will operate from Warsaw Chopin Airport to Oslo Gardermoen starting on 25 March 2018. Tickets are already available on sale. 

LOT will offer 13 flights per week on Warsaw-Oslo route to be operated twice a day: in the morning and in the evening on a daily basis (except Saturday). On Saturday LOT will operate only the morning flight.

WAW-OSL, 08:00-10:00, every day

OSL-WAW, 10:40-12:40, every day

WAW-OSL, 16:50-18:50 every day except Saturdays

OSL-WAW, 19:40-21:40 every day except Saturdays

The flights on Warsaw-Oslo route will be operated using Embraer 195 with a seat capacity of 112 passengers in three travel classes: business, economy premium and economy. The flight will last for two hours. The connection is addressed to businness passengers and travellers. It is well integrated with LOT’s network of connections, allowing short transfers on flights to many destinations worldwide.

“Thanks to flights recently offered by LOT, passengers from Warsaw, Polish regional airports and a number of airports in Central and Eastern Europe will be able to fly into Oslo in the morning and return in the evening, which is very important for passengers travelling for businness,” says Adrian Kubicki, Director of Corporate Communications. “Whereas passengers travelling from Oslo will be able to benefit from numerous convenient connecting flights from Warsaw to 72 destinations around the world as part of LOT’s network. For passengers from Oslo the Warsaw Chopin Airport will become a gateway to Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans and will allow convenient connections to the Far East,” he adds.

Oslo is the 19th destination launched by LOT this year. The development of the network of connections is one of key elements of LOT’s profitable growth strategy in force since 2016. Thanks to that strategy, LOT have succeeded in improving their financial performance, developing the fleet and network and expanding the range of services. 2017 is the second consecutive year of LOT’s dynamic growth. Last year Polish flag carrier launched the highest number of routes among all airlines in Europe.

Tickets for flights on Warsaw-Oslo route are available for sale via all LOT sales channels, including the lot.com website, LOT Travel Agency and LOT Contact Center, as well as travel agents.

Hong Kong Airlines to launch direct flights to San Francisco, USA

[Hong Kong ▪ 12 October 2017] Hong Kong Airlines has announced that it will launch a new non-stop service between Hong Kong and San Francisco from 25 March 2018.
The new service will expand the airline’s presence in North America, following the launch of its services to Vancouver on 30 June 2017 and Los Angeles on 18 December 2017. Hong Kong Airlines will also be looking to further enhance connectivity to the US by launching a service to New York later in 2018.
The timing of the new service ensures that travellers arrive in San Francisco early in the morning – particularly enticing for those seeking to maximise their time in The Golden City. In turn, an evening arrival back in Hong Kong guarantees passengers a restful sleep, following a long flight.
Hong Kong Airlines’ new Hong Kong-San Francisco service will be operated by its brand-new Airbus A350. The fuel-efficient widebody aircraft features a total of 334 seats, with 33 in Business Class, 108 in Economy Comfort and 193 in Economy Class.

All Business Class seats have a width of 23” and are able to fully recline into a flatbed. This, combined with specially designed smooth and soft bedding, will ensure that passengers can enjoy the highest quality of sleep in the air. Meanwhile, all seats are also equipped with the latest high-definition TV screens offering a variety of inflight entertainment options, including movies, television, news and music. Each seat also has a power outlet and USB port fitted to the side for maximum convenience. Finally, onboard Wi-Fi service is available to all passengers, of which the first 15 minutes of use is free.

According to San Francisco International Airport, it served an all-time record of 53.1 million passengers last year, which represented a 6.1% growth year on year. As a popular destination for both business and leisure travellers, we are delighted to offer passengers with more flexibility and options when travelling to The Golden City.”

ROC President Tsai Ing-wen delivers 2017 National Day address: “Better Taiwan”

In her National Day address Oct. 10, President Tsai Ing-wen elaborated on her administration’s efforts to fulfill the government’s commitments and accelerate reform, safeguard Taiwan’s democracy and freedom, and find Taiwan’s place in the new international order.

“We are a government that can resolve problems,” President Tsai said on the 106th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China. “My job is to overcome Taiwan’s challenges, one by one.”

President Tsai reaffirmed the role of the armed forces in safeguarding Taiwan’s democracy and freedom. She pledged to bolster military capabilities, raise morale, and strengthen self-defense. Taiwan’s commitment to building its own military jets and submarines will create many new jobs in the indigenous defense industry, as the nation works to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and across the region, she pointed out.

On cross-strait relations, President Tsai reiterated her consistent stance: “Our goodwill will not change, our commitment will not change, we will not revert to the old path of confrontation, and we will not bow to pressure.” She stressed the peaceful developments of the past 30 years, including family visits and student exchanges, and called for the two sides to work together in new modes of cross-strait interaction.

On finding Taiwan’s place in the new international order, President Tsai emphasized Taiwan’s irreplaceable role in the Asia-Pacific, closer ties with New Southbound Policy partner countries, and strong relations with diplomatic allies based on steadfast diplomacy and mutual assistance for mutual benefit. She explained the results in trade, talent exchanges, industrial cooperation, and credit guarantees for small and medium businesses under the New Southbound Policy, adding that Taiwan is working with Southeast Asian countries to fight dengue fever, establishing Taiping Island as a center for humanitarian assistance, and building a greenhouse gas monitoring station on Dongsha (Pratas) Island.

Taiwan is also playing a very proactive role internationally, having ratified international rights covenants and issued its first voluntary national review of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, President Tsai said. Official development assistance to diplomatic allies and New Southbound Policy partner countries is being promoted, and Taiwan is joining in efforts to resolve nontraditional security threats from climate change, resource scarcity, communicable diseases, and terrorism.

President Tsai ended her address by thanking the people of Taiwan. “We will become better together.”

Europese Commissie wil migratie terecht onder controle brengen, maar vergeet maximumlimiet

De Europese Commissie heeft vandaag een aantal concrete voorstellen gedaan om de migratie naar Europa onder controle te brengen. Zo zullen de lidstaten tot drie jaar lang interne grenscontroles kunnen herinvoeren bij een pertinent migratieprobleem of aanhoudende terreurdreiging. Hiernaast wil de Commissie dat de lidstaten vrijwillig 50.000 vluchtelingen opnemen. “Het is alleszins belangrijk dat de Commissie aangeeft dat deze legale instroom moet samengaan met het verder stoppen van de illegale instroom. Maar hoewel de voorstellen van de Commissie een stap in de goede richting zijn, is er meer nodig. We moeten menselijkheid aan nog meer realisme koppelen. Zonder een efficiënt terugkeerbeleid én een maximumlimiet op het aantal asielzoekers kan van een succesvol Europees asielbeleid geen sprake zijn. Het is alvast hoopgevend dat EVP-fractieleider Weber vandaag wél voor zo’n limiet pleitte”, reageert Europarlementslid Helga Stevens.

Het is positief dat de Schengengrenscode aangepast wordt, vindt Stevens. “Vandaag kunnen de lidstaten de interne grenzen in principe maximaal twee jaar sluiten. Het besef dringt ook bij Europa door dat de veiligheidsdreiging, onder andere door de instroom van terugkerende Syriëstrijders, blijft aanhouden. Zeker gezien de aanhoudende nederlagen van IS in Syrië en Irak. Maar die maximumperiode loopt voor een aantal getroffen landen af in november van dit jaar. Het werd dus hoog tijd om actie te ondernemen, zodat de lidstaten de noodzakelijke identiteitscontroles aan de grenzen in deze onzekere tijden verder kunnen zetten.”

Hiernaast vraagt de Commissie aan de lidstaten om bijkomende vluchtelingen op te nemen. Ze zouden daarvoor van Europa 10.000 euro per persoon krijgen. Deze hervestiging is vrijwillig. Stevens: “Ik werk momenteel in het Europees Parlement aan een hervestigingsmechanisme. Dit wetsvoorstel houdt concreet in dat de opvang van vluchtelingen uit een bepaald land gekoppeld wordt aan een maximumlimiet en een duidelijk engagement van het herkomstland om illegale migranten terug te nemen. De N-VA is dus een voorstander van vrijwillige hervestiging, maar enkel indien de illegale routes worden gesloten, er een maximumlimiet wordt afgesproken én lidstaten de opgenomen vluchtelingen kunnen verplichten tot een integratie- en activeringsbeleid op maat.”

Stevens verwelkomt dus de focus van de Commissie op een versnelde terugkeer van illegale migranten. “De Commissie lijkt eindelijk in te zien dat er geen draagvlak is bij de bevolking voor het opnemen van extra vluchtelingen, zolang de illegale stromen van economische gelukszoekers niet gestopt worden. Ze zorgde onder meer voor een geüpdatete versie van een EU-handleiding die de lidstaten moet bijstaan in een efficiënt terugkeerbeleid. Maar het is naïef om te denken dat het probleem daarmee verdwijnt. Verder investeren in de herkomstregio’s én het invoeren van pushbacks zullen voor een fundamenteel ontradingseffect zorgen.”

South Koreans Rescue Guam

A study by ForwardKeys reveals that the imposition of new UN sanctions, followed by the ratcheting up of hostile rhetoric between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un on 9th August, triggered a decline in tourism to Guam. It was then that Donald Trump warned that any threat to the USA would be met with “fire and fury” and Pyongyang responded, saying it was “carefully examining” a plan to strike Guam, home to a US military base. In the five weeks that followed, arrivals of people staying between four and twenty-one nights (a typical tourist visit), fell by 9%, with arrivals from Japan, traditionally Guam’s most important origin market, falling 30%.

 

The fall in travel to Guam would have been much more substantial, were it not for a remarkable rise in enthusiasm for the Pacific island from South Korea. Prior to 9th August, arrivals in Guam were up 11% but that was due to a 41% increase in travel from South Korea, off-setting a 13% decline in visits from Japan.

In producing its reports, ForwardKeys analyses more than 17m flight booking transactions a day, drawing data from all the major global air reservation systems and selected airlines and tour operators. This information is enhanced with further independent data sets, including flight search and official government statistics plus data science to paint a picture of who is travelling where and when, and to predict future travel patterns.

Looking deeper at people’s plans to travel to Guam by analysing travel bookings made to date (for stays of the same duration), it is clear that after 9th August, overall bookings fell by 43%, benchmarked against the same period last year and bookings from Japan fell by 65%. By comparison, bookings from South Korea fell by 16%.

Looking ahead, by analysing the state of current bookings made for travel to Guam up to the end of the year, the current situation is that overall bookings are 3% behind where they were at the same time last year. Current bookings from Japan are 24% behind; from the USA, they are 17% behind; from Hong Kong, they are 15% behind and from China, they are 51% behind. However, on a much more encouraging note, current bookings from South Korea are 14% ahead.

 

The strong growth in bookings can be partly attributed to increased air capacity between Guam and South Korea. From 13th September 2017, Air Seoul became the sixth carrier from Korea to provide direct services to Guam. The initial schedule is a five times weekly operation but Air Seoul will increase this to daily operations in October.

Mario Hardy, CEO, Pacific Asia Travel Association, commented: “We live in a world of constant volatility, uncertainty and political instability which is of great concern for many destinations around the globe. Olivier Jager, CEO, ForwardKeys, concluded: “Whilst the stall in bookings for Guam is a concern, current bookings are a snap-shot as of now and it is still possible for the momentum to recover, if for example, the sabre-rattling has caused people simply to book later (ie: closer to the date of travel) rather than not to come. One cannot be surprised that the escalating tension between North Korea and the USA has deterred visitors to Guam. What is interesting is the extraordinary extent to which the South Korean market is the ‘white knight’, bucking the trend. I can only speculate that South Koreans have been enthused by Guam’s promotional claims that it is the perfect destination for romance – and by going there, are demonstrating they are much more interested in making love than war!”

Vakantiesalon Antwerpen: dansen voor de 40ste editie

Het Vakantiesalon van Antwerpen viert in januari 2018 de 40ste editie van Vlaanderens grootste vakantiehappening. Die verjaardag gaat niet onopgemerkt voorbij. Deze feestelijke editie staat in het teken van dansen rond de wereld en bezoekers worden extra in de watten gelegd.

Bij elk feest hoort muziek en dans. Dat vinden ook de organisatoren van het Antwerpse Vakantiesalon dat in januari voor de veertigste keer georganiseerd wordt. “Samen met de exposanten, zorgen we tijdens de feesteditie voor een groots evenement met animatie uit de hele wereld” zegt Christelle Fiore, verantwoordelijke van de beurs. “Op verschillende podia en bij verschillende exposanten zal er gefeest worden en mogen bezoekers rustig meedansen”.

Bezoekers mogen zich tijdens de beurs niet alleen aan een nieuw thema verwachten; de verschillende exposantenzones worden vernieuwd en uitgebreid. Ook het logo en de website kregen een hedendaagse look.

Dit jaar ontving het Vakantiesalon van Antwerpen bijna 80.000 bezoekers maar voor de feesteditie worden nog meer bezoekers verwacht.

Het Vakantiesalon van Antwerpen vindt van donderdag 25 tot en met zondag 28 januari 2018 plaats in de hallen van Antwerp Expo.
